The PhD in Integrated Biology is awarded by the Graduate College. Instruction is offered through the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet the Admission Requirements of the Graduate College and the department offering the degree program (review the Integrated Biology Program web site or the General Catalog for departmental requirements).

Applicable to Fall 2026 only: Prior to formally applying to the PhD program through the Office of Admissions (and paying the requisite application fee), applicants are advised to correspond with and receive assurances of laboratory affiliation from a Department of Biology faculty member. This may entail sending informal transcripts/grade reports and requested documentation to the faculty member. In addition, any assurance from the proposed faculty mentor would be conditional on the approval of the formal application by the Department's Graduate Admissions Committee

International students whose first language is not English are advised to review the English language proficiency recommendations for prospective applicants. First year PhD students are likely to have some financial support provided through Research Assistantships (RAs) or Teaching Assistantships (TAs), though support is not guaranteed. TA appointments require certification of a high degree of English proficiency. Therefore, it is necessary to admit only students with a sufficiently high TOEFL scores (at least 100 overall on the iBT, with a recommended speaking score of 25 or greater).

Estimated Cost of Attendance

Tuition and fees vary by degree program and the type of student you are.

For the Integrated Biology Graduate Program in the Department of Biology, students admitted to the PhD program may receive $26,260 per academic year through graduate assistantships, plus a full-tuition scholarship, low-cost health care insurance premiums, and payment coverage of 50% of University mandatory fees for up to 5 years in the program.
