Philosophy (MA or PhD)
The MA and the PhD in Philosophy are awarded by the Graduate College. Instruction is offered through the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. All applicants apply to the PhD program, as there is no terminal MA program. Students may earn their MA along the way, provided they have committee approval and have completed the required number of semester hours of course work. The MA is available with or without a thesis. Students may also earn the MA if they are pursuing a combined graduate degree with another program on campus.

Applicants must meet the Admission Requirements of the Graduate College and the department offering the degree program (review the department's web site or the General Catalog for departmental requirements).

Tuition and fees vary by degree program and the type of student you are.

Application Procedures
To apply to this degree program, you will need to submit some application materials to your academic department and some to the Office of Admissions.
Materials to send to the department:
- Unofficial copies of all academic records/transcripts (current and former UI students do not need to provide UI transcripts)
- At least three Letters of Recommendation (PDF)
- Application for Graduate Awards (PDF)
- A sample of your philosophical writing
- A statement of purpose
Materials to send to Admissions:
- Your official academic records/transcripts (current and former UI students do not need to provide UI transcripts)
- Your official GRE scores from Educational Testing Service (the University's institutional code is 6681); applicants to the Master's Program may substitute LSAT scores for the GRE
- International students may also be required to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores to comply with the university's English Language Proficiency Requirements.
- Once recommended for admission, international students must send a Financial Statement.
